Kettering College Students, Faculty and Staff March to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr
On Monday, January 15, at 10:00 a.m., Kettering College students celebrated the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and participated in the annual MLK Day march and rally in downtown Dayton.
The snowy morning started with a van that provided Kettering College students transportation to the march that started at Sinclair Community College. Kettering College students, faculty, and staff were joined by hundreds of members of the Dayton community, as well as Kettering Health Network leaders and employees to march from the Peace Bridge through the streets of downtown Dayton.
When asked why she participated in the march, senior nursing student Jasmyne Martin replied, “I march because I believe in the Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream. To see people from the college and Kettering Health Network show up to march makes me feel like I’m part of a network that believes in something bigger.”
The college has participated in the annual march for over 15 years, bringing together students, faculty and staff of Kettering College to symbolize the marches that took place during the Civil Rights movement.
“Participating in the march gives me a feeling of solidarity with our community,” said Victor Brown, Dean of Enrollment and Student Life. “In a small way, it lets me make a statement for justice, fairness, and peace.”
The march ended at the Dayton Convention Center where David Anthony Johnson performed the “I Have a Dream” speech.
