Kettering College Sonography Student Earns National Scholarship
Kettering, Ohio (May 1) – Karen Brown, a first-year medical sonography student at Kettering College of Medical Arts, has been awarded the Anne Jones Scholarship by the Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU). This national scholarship is offered to a sonography student attending an accredited vascular sonography program in the United States.
In the scholarship’s four years of existence, Brown is the second Kettering College sonography student to receive the award. The first was Alison Beam, who split the award with a student from Oregon Institute of Technology in 2006.
“Karen was selected and encouraged by the Kettering College sonography faculty to submit an application for this scholarship. She’s an extremely bright student, and it’s no surprise to us that she was chosen to receive this award,” said Joyce Grube, chair of the medical sonography department. “I think it’s a tremendously positive reflection on the outstanding reputation that our sonography program continues to enjoy on the national stage, as well as on the talented students we recruit.”
The Anne Jones Scholarship Fund of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU) was established in 2005 to provide an annual educational scholarship of up to $2,500 for a vascular ultrasound student. First presented in June 2006, the annual scholarship honors the many contributions made to SVU and the vascular technology profession by Anne Jones, former SVU President (1985-1986) and former chair of SVU’s Government Relations Committee for several years.
The purpose of the Anne Jones Scholarship is to provide a qualified ultrasound student applicant with a monetary amount to further his/her education in vascular ultrasound and to pursue a career in the vascular ultrasound profession. Participating students are judged on their submitted Anne Jones Scholarship application detailing their educational background, school activities and work experience; their 500-word essay on their career goals and financial need; their official transcript showing their grade point average in an ultrasound school; and two letters of recommendation.
