Jonathan started his teaching career in 2005, right after receiving his BS degree in mathematics from Walla Walla University. During his first teaching job, he began a master’s program in mathematics education at Western Michigan University. During this time, he concentrated on mathematics standards (both at the state and the national level) as well as mathematics curriculum studies. He then participated in a three-year program learning about assessment for learning and formative assessment in K-12 education while simultaneously delving deeper into mathematics education topics at the doctoral level. Upon joining the faculty at Kettering College in 2011, Jonathan added physics to his mathematics teaching repertoire. In 2012, he added doctoral work to his teaching load and started a PhD program at the University of Cincinnati, where he concentrated on physics education and mixed methods research methodology. He graduated in December of 2016 and has been Dr. Engelman ever since. After graduating, Dr. Engelman began teaching in a more innovative way using electronic whiteboards to project his mathematics and physics examples and recording his lectures using lecture capture software. He continues to hone these skills as technology updates and changes but enjoys these challenges. Over the past few years, he has participated in the Institutional Outcomes and Degree Core Committee, the Research Committee, the Pillars Committee, and the College Technology Committee, as well as advising pre-sonography students. Most recently, Dr. Engelman is enjoying adding his favorite hobby, model rocketry, to his physics curriculum, where physics students get to launch model rocketry and analyze data collected during launch using appropriate physics models.
