KETTERING, Ohio, April 27, 2015– Kettering College is partnering with Kettering Medical Center on an immersion experience for nursing students. In May, Kettering College nursing students will start a semester-long clinical rotation on the neurological care unit at Kettering Medical Center. This unit has been designated as a dedicated education unit, or DEU. There, each student will be paired with a nurse preceptor, who will provide focused instruction and mentoring.
Kettering College and Kettering Medical Center are celebrating the launch of the DEU on Tuesday, April 28 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in Kettering Medical Center’s Schuster Conference Room. Kettering Medical Center is located at 3535 Southern Blvd. in Kettering.
Like the Kettering College nursing students who will participate in a traditional, semester-long clinical rotation, DEU students will spend about 250 hours on a patient care unit while also attending classes. The difference lies in the methodology by which students in the DEU program are engaged in patient care and interact with clinical staff. “These students will be an integral part of the neurological care unit’s workflow and culture, providing them with a very realistic work experience,” says Cherie Rebar, PhD, MBA, RN, FNP, COI, director of the Division of Nursing at Kettering College. “They also will benefit from having a one-on-one or one-on-two relationship with a nurse preceptor. These preceptors are passionate about educating future nurses, and excited about the professional relationships they’ll form with these students.”
While DEUs are gaining traction nationwide, the Kettering College/Kettering Medical Center DEU is only the third in Ohio.
