Kettering College Announces New Dean for Academic Affairs

Kettering, Ohio (March 14) – William “W.G.” Nelson, Jr., has accepted the position of dean for academic affairs at Kettering College of Medical Arts, announced college President Charles Scriven, Ph.D., on Friday.

Dr. Nelson comes to Kettering College after spending the last six years as a professor in the graduate School of Education at La Sierra University in Riverside, Calif. Since 2006, he also has chaired the university’s Department of Administration and Leadership.

Prior to his term at La Sierra, Dr. Nelson was president of Walla Walla (Wash.) College from 1994-2001. From 1988-94, he served in various positions, most recently as vice president for academic administration, at Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas. During the 1980s, he was principal at Shenandoah Valley Academy in New Market, Va.; at Indiana Academy in Cicero, Ind.; and at Mile High Academy in Denver, Colo.

“I was much impressed by Kettering College’s spirit of place during my visit there,” said Dr. Nelson. “It is clear to me that it is a positive educational and health care environment where good things are happening. I look forward to the opportunity of working with President Scriven and kc’s faculty, staff, students and administrative team, as we chart a strategic direction for the college’s future.”

After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in history at Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, Mass., in 1972, Dr. Nelson went on to earn his master’s in education at Worcester (Mass.) State College in 1978. He received his doctorate in education from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., in 1993.

“Dr. Nelson inspires people,” said Dr. Scriven. “He knows leadership is about getting things done. He will keep us on the ‘Journey to Better’ that is our legacy as a Kettering institution.”

With plans to join the Kettering College administrative team this summer, Dr. Nelson fills the vacancy left by Dr. Norman Wendth, who became president of Atlantic Union College last year.
