COMPASSION

Compassion

Kettering College prepares students to serve and meet the needs of a hurting world, not only after they graduate, but right here and right now. Through local outreach projects and worldwide mission trips, Campus Ministries provides students with plenty of opportunities to serve. Our desire is to truly encounter others, and to view the world through the eyes of Jesus. Our mission is to provide students with a life-changing opportunity to experience real medical need internationally, and serving in a voluntary capacity that allows for hands-on experiences.

Kettering College offers a variety of services that students are able to participate in. You won’t have to leave the country to find an individual, or even an entire community, in need. If our students wish to get involved without disrupting the weekly routine of studying, Campus Ministries hosts local programs on the weekends including feeding the homeless in Columbus, OH, working in a soup kitchen and building relationships with the less fortunate of Dayton, OH, educating and interacting with the young gentlemen of the Victory Project, and singing songs, passing out roses, and praying with the residents at the Sycamore Glen Retirement Center. Our local outreach ministry provides us with the opportunity to offer ourselves to those in our community and in our neighborhood.

If you have a passion to travel and to reach outside of your comfort zone, Kettering College is excited to provide you with several opportunities to serve in another country. In collaboration with the Honors Program, every year Campus Ministries offers the Peru medical mission trip during spring break. If there’s a desire to spend an extended period of time to serve in a mission trip, Campus Ministries hosts the International Medical Missionary (IMM) in countries like Thailand, Marshall Islands, India, Chad, and Sierra Leone. The IMM Program takes you overseas to help care for a community of people who will change your life as much as you change theirs.

    • Service Learning

Service Learning is a structured learning experience that combines academic preparation, collaborative relationships, community engagement, and critical reflection.

Service learning is an educational opportunity where students learn the attitudes, values, and skills to be a life-long community-engaged practitioner. Service learning is geared toward under-served communities, and includes communication and collaboration with a community partner, both before and after the activity. The purpose of service learning is for students to gain an appreciation for the strengths and needs of their community, and to find ways to meet those needs as a life-long practice.

The vision is that students go back and forth in a cycle: applying what they learn in the classroom to a real need in the community, then using their experiences from service as a basis for further learning in the course, and back again, even into the student clinical environment, employment, and the student’s personal way of life.

    • Service Learning Honors Program

Service learning combines community service with academic learning objectives, preparation and intellectual reflection.  Kettering College creates opportunities for service learning in the Vaughan-Beaven Service Learning Honors Program, as well as throughout our entire curriculum.

Service Learning Honors Program students take specially designed courses that will prepare them to assess needs in a community, learn how to meet those needs, and understand and evaluate challenges and success during and after their experience. Kettering College provides many off-campus and extracurricular opportunities – locally and internationally – for students to meet the health care service needs of a variety of communities.
