Nursing Students Volunteer During Wellness Class

The Kettering College Nursing department is doing great things in and out of the classroom. Healthcare systems all over the world are experiencing staffing shortages and in need of help in a variety of departments. Kettering Health was no exception. Recently, during one of their times of need, the nursing faculty came up with a brilliant idea to help support Kettering Health.

Second-year nursing students are required to complete a “wellness class” as part of their curriculum. The plan was to have the wellness class use this opportunity as a passport experience and provide a hands-on opportunity of diverse tasks. On January 13, 2022, the nursing students participated in Kettering Health’s “Helping Hands” volunteer program.

During their time, 18 departments were served including surgery, Cardiology, oncology, emergency, radiology, and nutrition services.

Cynthia Hammond, PhD, MS, MSN, RN, assistant professor in the Kettering College department of nursing, originated the idea and believes this was an opportunity for the Wellness Class students to participate in service learning. “The exposure will present the Wellness students to the interior operations of the hospital organization. This service learning experience will provide a hands-on experience at an entry level between clinical and patient care tasks and non-clinical and helping hands tasks.”

The nursing department intends to include the Helping Hands component into the Wellness curriculum as a part of the course. Additionally, students were offered employment at the hospital from 2–12 hour increments at $15 per hour.
